SUMMARY:Hike to see a Vertical Bog on the Parkway
DESCRIPTION:Ruth Cumberland and Brett Hopkins will lead us on a very slow and very short walk along one of North Carolina’s rarest plant communities! The Vertical Bog on the Blue Ridge Parkway was created when crews blasted through sections of rock to create the Parkway, leaving a high rock face exposed along the road. Continuous water seepage and unique chemistry create a perfect environment for many unusual plant species to thrive.\nWe will see sundew, Grass-of-Parnassus, and many other rare and endemic species and discuss what makes this place so special.\nWhile the walk will be very short, it is always wet so wear waterproof shoes and consider a raincoat as the water can spray off the rocks as it trickles down from above. It may also be much cooler as we will be at 5,500’ elevation.\nThe walk is along the Parkway so no dogs allowed or children under 12. This hike is limited to 20 people and you must be a member to attend.\nExact location and driving instructions will be sent when you registered.\nClick Here to Register\n
