SUMMARY:Garden Maintenance from the Perspective of Insects – Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Zoom presentation by Louise Romanow, Wake County Extension Master Gardener. \nNative bees are much more important as pollinators than are European honey bees.  For many native bees ovipositing and overwintering sites are in the hollow stems of standing, dead plant material or in leaf litter.  Let’s rethink ‘fall cleanup’ in our gardens, keeping leaf litter on the ground and leaving dead stalks of herbaceous and woody plants, to maintain these valuable sites for native insects.  Remember, as Piet Oudolf said, brown is a color too!\nLouise Romanow has always been interested in plants, especially in nature.  To find work outside with the goal of working toward a healthier planet, she studied entomology at NCSU, getting a PhD.  She is now a Master Gardener volunteer with Wake Extension Service, and often answers homeowner questions, writes occasional articles, gives occasional talks, and helps put together the biennial training for new volunteers.
